Our Story

Brijit was born on 17 March 2020 as a direct response to the dislocation created by the COVID-19 pandemic and our collective reaction to it. We’re setting out to accomplish three things in a very short period of time — five days from concept to first deliveries.

  1. Create meaningful revenue for small, local, woman-owned food businesses at a time when they need it most. The sales we create through Brijit makes a meaningful difference for these entrepreneurs in a fundamentally uncertain time.

  2. Help people live their values. We do this by delivering fresh local food that brings a little bit of joy and flavor into their homes, and by enabling people to support the kind of businesses that make a community great.

  3. Prove a model that others can follow. If we’re successful in Washington, DC, our home market, we hope to see Brijit, or a Brijit-like effort, in cities everywhere.

Brijit is an Agricity project. Our company was founded in 2010 to help build healthier, more sustainable, more productive cities.

Compost Cab, our pioneering community composting service, has diverted more than 4 million pounds of food scraps from landfills, and inspired dozens of entrepreneurs to bring similar efforts to their own communities nationwide. Agricity also designs municipal-scale organics recycling programs (including DC’s food waste dropoff program), provides strategic sustainability services for events and to organizations large and small, and supports dozens of urban farms, community gardens and social-service organizations through our work. We are proudly based in the nation’s capital.
