Just reading about the squabbles over James Brown's last will and testament might give you a migraine; it seems that everyone has a stake in the bounty. But the Godfather of Soul bequeathed his "personal and household effects" to six of a possible 14 children, and the rest he placed in a trust divided into two funds -- one for his grandchildren's education and the other for tuition for financially needy students in South Carolina and Georgia. Flynn stays away from Brown's musical contributions, but there's plenty here about his sexual history, financial struggles, and abusive nature.

in GQ by Peter Savodnik, April 2008
The once booming Russian mail-order bride business has fallen on hard times -- or more appropriately, good times. The Russian economy is on the rise and suddenly the things that were only attainable to Russian women by marrying an American are now attainable within their own country. All of this has hurt businesses like Jack Bragg's First Dream, which attempts to pair American men with Russian women. Savodnik writes a solid introduction to the industry, including details about its history, the past climate, current economic realities, and even some sociological explanations for American men's interest in Russian women.

This is not your usual rock-star interview, but then again Keith Richards hasn't led a usual career. Though there's some talk about wild times, his responses gravitate towards family and grandchildren. He might threaten his daughter's boyfriends, but he's undeniably a rock star -- he once got a mere $20 ticket for a drug possession). Despite getting old, Richards has a great message about not being afraid of old age, and this scattered interview offers some interesting insight into his life and times.

in GQ by Adam Sachs, April 2008
Though Sachs calls divorce "the Ultimate Aphrodisiac," the first half of his article is anything but sexy. Sachs recounts (rather painfully) the details of his wife divorcing him from the day she walked out to when she sued him for "inhuman treatment." Despite the pain he manages to find not love, but some sort of affection again. He describes a few subsequent relationships with anonymous woman, and we learn a little about how they helped him find that there is life after divorce. It's a good article with a hopeful message that doesn't evade the messy realities of broken hearts.

in GQ by GQ, April 2008
GQ isn't breaking any new ground with this dating advice piece. Open the door for her, tell her she's beautiful, buy her things, and look into her eyes -- these are just a few of the 60 or so clichés that GQ rattles off about how to treat a woman. There are some amusing stories of men getting it wrong, which might be worth a laugh or two, but they're barely worth digging out. The article even ends with a final line akin to finishing a book with an "it was all a dream" kicker. The flashy, thin piece reads simply like a teen-mag pull-out.

dating
in GQ by Mark Healy, April 2008
Supermodel Adriana Lima sits down with GQ and dispels the myths that supermodels are something other than ordinary women. None of the advice in this article would be out of place in a normal story about how to treat a woman. Ignore your cell phone, take care of her when she's ill, don't hit on her friends, don't be too pushy, be yourself -- these are just a few of the tired aphorisms Lima lists. Healy does little to convince readers that this hollow story is worth reading, aside from the pictures.

dating
in GQ by Matt Haber, April 2008
It's an old cliché: A guy does something with his wife or girlfriend that takes him away from his friends, and the guys at the bar claim he's "whipped." This article celebrates 25 of the most whipped men in a variety of fields from football to politics including musicians like Seal and director Kevin Smith. Sometimes the assessments are funny, other times they're ridiculous, but it's important to keep in mind that just as with the barfly buddies, the ripping seems to be in the spirit of good fun.

in GQ by Joel Stein, April 2008
Stein picks the brain of Joe Francis, founder of Girls Gone Wild and current inmate at a Reno prison. The article strives to answer the inevitable question that arises when a celebrity (however reviled) winds up behind bars: "What went wrong?" Personal anecdotes and interviews with Francis' friends and family all point to a likely factor: Francis' ever-defiant personality. For his part Francis remains completely unrepentant, despite having now been in jail for eight months. Accepting no personal blame for his current situation, Francis ludicrously considers himself something of a modern-day Rosa Parks -- a person simply standing up for his own rights.

"Call your doctor if you experience an erection lasting longer than four hours." This ubiquitous erectile dysfunction warning might seem funny at first, and the medication might seem like an attractive idea to men seeking to impress women; however, the reality isn't what it seems. Some women aren't too thrilled about a four hour erection, and the medical reality could be frightening enough to scare some men off Viagra altogether. The article is an enjoyable mix of humor and fact, a good read for anyone who's seen the inescapable commercials.

in GQ by Tom Carson, April 2008
John Adams is the subject of an HBO miniseries, so finally the nation's second president is getting the same kind of treatment that other early presidents like Washington and Jefferson have received. But despite mentioning that Adams had received the short end of the stick, Carson mostly writes about the revolutionary backdrop, Benjamin Franklin, Abigail Adams and the "best GW" the author's ever seen. Perhaps Adams' life is compelling enough to receive a miniseries treatment, but this piece makes it seem as if he was only a convenient starting point for a sexy revolution story.
