Taster's Choice
in New York by Sam Anderson, 24 December 2007
Carl Wilson's new book, Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, asks the taboo question: "Just why do we hate Celine Dion so much?" It's taboo because any self-respecting music fan shouldn't have to think about why -- they just hate her. But Wilson goes deeper, wisely pointing out that taste does not exist in a vacuum but is rather a sort of "cultural capital"; no one will think you are cool if you like Dion. As Anderson points out, this is a bold step for a music critic, and should be applauded.
