Carlson chronicles the efforts by the National Security Archive, a nongovernmental institution that preserves the odds and ends of history gleaned from 23 years of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. These efforts have yielded more than five million pages of government documents that otherwise may not have been made public, and are now available on the Institute's website. The collection includes photos of Elvis meeting with President Nixon (to ask for permission to carry drugs), CIA guidebooks advising on effective killing methods, the CIA's efforts to assassinate foreign leaders, and much more. It's an enthralling article for history buffs, conspiracy theorists, and the curious.
