America's second president historically hasn't gotten a whole lot of press, having served his term between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. However, HBO's new miniseries, John Adams, spotlights the man as "noble but vain, intellectual but provincial, idealistic but cautious." The series contrasts Adams' belief in changing people's conditions, rather than their souls, with Jefferson's Enlightenment optimism. This ideological difference led Jefferson to oppose a strong Constitution, while Adams favored one in order to prevent mob rule and injustice. Poniewozik stretches to compare Jefferson to Barack Obama and Adams to Hillary Clinton, but regardless, Poniewozik's excitement about the series is contagious.
