NASCAR's Race Problem
in Portfolio by Melba Newsome, February 2008
Newsome's finely tuned report on racial prejudice in the $350-million-a-year NASCAR auto-racing franchise notes the lackluster promotion of diversity awareness by management. But the chief focus is on the popular Southern sport's potential breakthrough figure, Marc Davis, who some liken to Tiger Woods. A minor incident which provoked fans into shouting rude remarks and racial epithets at Davis did not faze the teenager, whose biggest challenge is finding adequate sponsorship for higher-tier races. Corporate sponsors, who must pay millions each season, are loath to take controversial stands or risk alienating committed fans.
